What is Artist Development?
Artist Development can take a multitude of forms. My role as curatorial support starts by reflecting on the definition of curating, ‘to care.’ I help take care of you and your work, and help you enliven and deepen your connection to your art. I help you focus on the themes of your discipline and consider your audience and the opportunities to aspire to and reach. Development is evolution, clarity, and confidence in your artistry.

My job as a curator, coach, and artist’s support is to help you know yourself and your practice with certainty and confidence. Part of the work we would do together is interview and narrative-based; I ask questions so that the landscape of understanding your work is opened up and the constellation of the conceptual work is told thoroughly. These stories are uniquely yours, and my job is never to rewrite your experience. However, having an outside perspective sometimes helps draw new links and connections you may not have been aware of.
Who is Considered an Artist?
The way I define ‘artist’ is as a person who sees the world through a unique lens and expresses their perspective through one or more outlets. Some of those outlets might include: physical or digital art, design, music, sound, movement, performance, acting, textiles, comedy, writing, philosophy, speaking, curating, or social and community work. I don’t think there is a ‘wrong’ artistic outlet; sometimes it’s just a feeling. I say this because development can be for any form of creative person.
Practical and Collaborative
At times artist/s will request that our work together become more evolved and project-based. Instead of a weekly or monthly conversation, we may shift into a collaboration. This might look like me adding more of my own ideas to the collaboration. Being more involved in finding a supportive framework/container for your work. At times, I might do research with you, write proposals or artist statements, write an essay for a publication, create an exhibition, or some other project or initiative. Whatever the direction may be, I am more than happy to discuss and work on projects with my clients, depending on my availability. Once a project ends, the option to convene our artist development conversations is always available. In a period of a collaborative project, depending on the amount of involvement, a new rate will be discussed.
